If you take the time to really think about it, you’ll realize that the food industry is interested in one thing, and thing only. Money. Our supermarkets are filled with thousands of processed foods that are essentially poison. There are a few executions of course, but most of the big players in the food industry will sell virtually anything the regulators let them, as long as it’s something people will buy, and is therefore profitable. The dangers posed by the products they sell are well known to them. They simply don’t care as long as those products remain profitable. Here is a list of 11 cancer-causing foods that you probably eat regularly, and should consider giving up.

1. Microwave Popcorn

Sounds harmless enough, doesn’t it? Firstly, there are lingering questions about anything cooked in a microwave oven, but more importantly, many brands of microwave popcorn are packaged in bags that are lined with something called perfluorooctanoic acid. This is a substance that’s also found in Teflon non-stick cookware, and it’s been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a known carcinogen. Microwave popcorn is also commonly coated with something called diacetyl, which was discontinued by as least one manufacturer after their workers experienced lung problems after being exposed to it.

2. Canned Tomatoes

Actually, this applies to canned anything, and you’ll understand why as you read on. Cans are typically lined with a substance called bisphenol-A, which is also known as BPA. Studies involving lab animals that were exposed to BPA showed that it actually affected the way genes function inside the brain. BPA is one of those “secret” ingredients food manufacturers are not required to disclose, so don’t waste your time looking for it on food labels. Although consumption of nearly all canned goods should be limited, tomatoes are a particular concern, since the acid content in them tends to liberate more BPA from the sides of the can and cause it to accumulate in the product.

3. Processed Meats

There are many ways to prepare meat to make it more tasty, but what some of these companies do is taking it way beyond any reasonable measure. Some of the worst offenders on this list are hot dogs, sausages, bacon and lunch meats. The greatest danger is from the preservatives used during their preparation, many of which are known carcinogens. Smoked meats are not exactly a healthy alternative since the smoke causes residues such as tar that can end up in the product.

4. Farmed Fish

If you want to enjoy the healthy benefits fish offers, stay away from the farm-raised variety. Fish farms are large-scale operations that have one goal, and that’s profit. Farmed fish are raised on a diet of unnatural foods that are laced with chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics and various other carcinogens. The fish themselves also tend to be unhealthy, and are the products of overcrowded conditions where they are over stressed. That causes them to be much more vulnerable to parasites like sea lice, which infect farmed fish at a rate 30 times higher than wild fish.

5. Potato Chips

One particular brand of potato chips is well-known for their advertising slogan that states, “betcha can’t eat just one.” For many people, that is very true, and potato chips have a nearly addictive quality for some. The most serious problems with potato chips is that they are cooked at very high temperature, which causes the formation of a substance called acrylamide. A known carcinogen, acrylamide is also found in cigarettes.
