A goal in each half helped QNB Stars league (QSL) winners Al Sadd to overcome a fighting Al Rayyan 2-0 and storm into the final of the Amir Cup here yesterday.
At the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Al Sadd started the scoring in the 12th minute through a goal from Ali Asad and added a second one through Baghdad Bounedjah in the 84th minute.
Al Sadd dominated play right from kick off and with Bounedjah and Akram Afif working in tandem it was not long before the Al Rayyan citadel caved in.
The Wolves struck on the goal front through a move initiated by Afif with Asad converting the square pass with aplomb much to the delight of the Al Sadd fans.
Al Sadd continued to dictate terms while keeping the Al Rayyan defense guessing. They almost added a second one in the 37th minute, but Al Rayyan keeper Fahad Younis rose to the occasion to save a spot kick.
Bounedjah, who was entrusted with the spot kick saw his penalty kick saved by Younis to keep Al Rayyan where much in the match.
Al Rayyan managed to put together the occasional attack but could not break through the Al Sadd defensive cordon and when they got past the back four Al Sadd keeper Saad Abdulla Al Dosari blocked or deflected the attempts at goals.
Al Sadd put the issue beyond doubt with six minutes to go for the final whistle with Bounedjah making amends to his penalty miss by scoring a goal. Al Sadd now await the winners of today’s second semi-final between Al Duhail and Al Sailiya. The final of the prestigious event will take place on May 16 at Al Wakrah Stadium.Courtesy:The Peninsula
