Qatar won the 7th Asian Beach Handball Championship defeating traditional rivals Oman 2-0 (12-8, 16-14) in a closely fought final in the Chinese city of Weihai yesterday.
The victory gave Qatar its 5th consecutive beach handball championship title in the 15-year history. Qatar, earlier won titles in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 to become the most successful team in the tournament’s history and interestingly, Oman were the runners-up in all four of those finals.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Qatar beat Iran 2-0 (20-14, 16-10) to reach the final. Oman had made it to the title match after defeating Vietnam 2-0 (13-12, 18-16). Meanwhile, Iran finished third after getting the better of Vietnam in the third place decider.
The championship in China serves as a qualifier for both the 2019 ANOC World Beach Games in Qatar and the 2020 IHF Men’s and Women’s Beach Handball Championships to be held in Italy. Qatar and Oman have already booked their places in the IHF event.
The men’s competition was split into two preliminary groups of six teams. Group A consists of Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Afghanistan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Qatar, while Iran is in Group B along with Oman, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Pakistan and Thailand.Courtesy:The Peninsula.
